چکیده

Dialogue systems that process user contributions only in chunks bounded by silence miss opportunities for producing helpful signals, such as backchannel utterances concurrent with the ongoing utterance— to the detriment of interaction quality. We survey in some detail what we call ‘subutterance’ phenomena, which such an approach misses, and then discuss two approaches to overcoming this limitation. The first is to add a ‘reactive layer’ to an otherwise unchanged, utterance-based dialogue manager. The other approach, less often taken, is to make the dialogue manager itself capable of producing such reactions. To explore the viability of such an approach, we sketch a dialogue management strategy capable of working at a sub-utterance level.

Linguistic phrase spotting in a simple application spoken dialogue system

Spoken dialogue systems have to cope with well known problems of spontaneous speech such as ungrammaticalities, hesitations or corrections. Besides, unrestricted speech poses the problem of paraphrasing, rising the number of utterances exceeding the linguistic coverage of the system. Concerning the linguistic processing of spontaneous speech, partial parsing represents a good method to achieve ...

Incremental Spoken Dialogue Systems: Tools and Data

Strict-turn taking models of dialogue do not accurately model human incremental processing, where users can process partial input and plan partial utterances in parallel. We discuss the current state of the art in incremental systems and propose tools and data required for further advances in the field of Incremental Spoken Dialogue Systems. 1 Incremental Spoken Dialogue Systems For Spoken Dial...

Example-based Speech Intention Understanding and Its Application to In-Car Spoken Dialogue System

This paper proposes a method of speech intention understanding based on dialogue examples. The method uses a spoken dialogue corpus with intention tags to regard the intention of each input utterance as that of the sentence to which it is the most similar in the corpus. The degree of similarity is calculated according to the degree of correspondence in morphemes and dependencies between sentenc...

Concept Type Prediction and Responsive Adaptation in a Dialogue System

Responsive adaptation in spoken dialogue systems involves a change in dialogue system behavior in response to a user or a dialogue situation. In this paper we address responsive adaptation in the automatic speech recognition module of a spoken dialogue system. We hypothesize that information about the content of a user utterance may help improve speech recognition. We use a two-step process to ...

A hybrid approach to spoken dialogue understanding: prosody, statistics and partial parsing

Linguistic processing in spoken dialogue systems has to be robust against a large number of phenomena such as recognizer errors, spontaneous speech phenomena and out-of-vocabulary (OOV) words. A commonly used solution to this problem is partial parsing, that aims at detecting only parts of sentences/utterances that are vital for the respective task of the parser. In our paper we present a frame...
